My battles with impostor syndrome

comparison impostor syndrome insecurity

Impostor syndrome!
Comparison.
Insecurity.

Familiar foes, right?

In life and leadership. I wish I could say I’ve beaten them entirely.
I’ve made progress for sure—but those antagonists still show up more than I’d like.

For example, it took me nearly two years to finally launch π‘…π‘’π‘π‘œπ‘œπ‘‘ π‘Œπ‘œπ‘’π‘Ÿ πΏπ‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘ β„Žπ‘–π‘ in early 2022.
Why? Because I kept wondering if I had anything truly worthwhile to offer.
What if people were kind, but secretly thought it sucked?
That I sucked!

Am I being too honest??

I’ll never forget the second cohort in Summer 2022—when a church network leader, fresh off an MBA, contacted me to ask if Reboot might help him.

IMPOSTOR SYNDROME ACTIVATED!!!

But he went for it—and apparently Reboot did help—because he later booked me to speak at a leaders’ retreat.

All this to say that I get quite frustrated with myself at times. But I’m slowly finding a deeper peace with the fact that what I bring to the world—and to other leaders—is, simply, myself.

That’s my USP.

The unique, messy, beautiful work God has been shaping through my life and leadership.
The scars, the failures, the breakthroughs, the mentors, the books, the joys, the doubts, the fears… all of it.
That’s what I offer the world. God in and through me.
And that’s what you bring too.

We’re all a little 'impostorish'! But, hopefully, we're doing our best—hoping to make God’s world a bit better, striving to build people up, not blow them up.

So go be YOU. Everybody else is taken.
You have something unique to bring to the world.
Your life. Your story. Your experience. Yourself.

And if it helps, someone - great!
And if it doesn't, don't sweat it!
You're not the saviour of the world - I believe that position has been taken.

The battles we face within are some of leadership’s most painful landmines. If you wrestle with this too—and if you say you don’t, I don’t believe you (or I envy you)—then please, be kind to yourself and take 50 minutes to work through my FREE self-guided, video-based course: “𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐒𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐒𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐑𝐞 πŸ“ π‹πšπ§ππ¦π’π§πžπ¬ 𝐨𝐟 π‹πžπšππžπ«π¬π‘π’π©.” There’s a full section on this inner battle with impostor syndrome, comparison, and insecurity, with more thoughts I hope will help you.

Here's what someone wrote a week or so back, having worked through it...

"Navigating the 5 Landmines of Leadership” is an easy and accessible course for busy leaders who want to pause, reflect and get better as a leader. The course helped me to recognize the unrealistic expectations I often place on myself as a leader. It’s given me a deeper self-awareness — especially in how I handle conflict and pressure — and shown me practical ways to protect my wellbeing so I can lead with longevity, not burnout. I’m walking away more grounded, more confident, and more equipped to lead well — both now and in the future."

So seriously—check out Navigating the 5 Landmines of Leadership. The feedback has been encouraging, and I believe it can genuinely help. It’s not AI-generated—it’s the fruit of a wounded life, committed to keep going, keep growing, and help others do the same.

Cheering and praying for you always,

Matt Summerfield
