We all need to be more like Evelyn Violet Bailey...

kindness

My little prayer walk was not going as planned.

Heavy winds and horizontal torrential rain! Ugh!

Thankfully, my host had lent me waterproofs, so I pushed on - trying not to be distracted by the elements, choosing instead to let my mind wander with God.

I’m not entirely sure why my thoughts drifted to kindness, but they did. I found myself chewing over what it would look like to see new levels of kindness explode through my life - especially in how I lead others.

Because let’s be honest: kindness can feel costly in leadership.

Our default can be to dig for dirt rather than mine for gold. When someone disappoints us, drops the ball, or frustrates us, it’s easy to assume the worst. To not be kind.

But Jesus' leadership style is different.
We’re called to believe the best.
To resist snap judgments.
To let compassion and empathy have a voice.
To remember that every person we lead carries a story - the good, the bad, and the painful. And that story shapes how they show up.

As I wrestled with all this, I came across a bench.
Far too wet to sit on - but I was drawn to the small memorial plaque:

In memory of Violet Evelyn Bailey, it said.
Coincidence?
Or a nudge from heaven?

Because beneath her name were words describing her life. Words about kindness.

The world would be a better place if more leaders were like Violet Evelyn Bailey — whoever she was. Here’s what was written of her:

“Kindness is given so softly, so gently, falling like tiny seeds along our paths and brightening them with flowers. A kind heart is a fountain of gladness, making everything in its vicinity freshen with smile.”

In Christian leadership, kindness isn’t weakness. It’s strength under control. It’s choosing to correct without crushing. To challenge without shaming. To see potential where others see problems.

It reflects the heart of Jesus.

Be encouraged today — choose kindness in how you lead, how you speak, how you respond. As Proverbs 3:3 reminds us:

“Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!
Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.”
Let’s lead like that.

P.S. Self-kindness matters too — especially if you’re leading for the long haul. You can’t keep giving out what you’re not receiving yourself. That’s why there’s a brand-new session on leadership wellbeing in the upgraded Reboot Your Leadership experience.
