My little prayer walk was not going as planned.
Heavy winds and horizontal torrential rain! Ugh!
Thankfully, my host had lent me waterproofs, so I pushed on - trying not to be distracted by the elements, choosing instead to let my mind wander with God.
I’m not entirely sure why my thoughts drifted to kindness, but they did. I found myself chewing over what it would look like to see new levels of kindness explode through my life - especially in how I lead others.
Because let’s be honest: kindness can feel costly in leadership.
Our default can be to dig for dirt rather than mine for gold. When someone disappoints us, drops the ball, or frustrates us, it’s easy to assume the worst. To not be kind.
But Jesus' leadership style is different. We’re called to believe the best. To resist snap judgments. To let compassion and empathy have a voice. To remember that every person we lead carries a story - the good, the bad, and the painful. And that story shapes how they show up.
As I wrestled with all this, I came across a bench. Far too wet to sit on - but I was drawn to the small memorial plaque:
In memory of Violet Evelyn Bailey, it said. Coincidence? Or a nudge from heaven?
